With allergy season just around the corner, now may be a good time to pay special attention to the health of your sinuses. The respiratory airways are lined with mucus membrane tissue, and more specifically tiny hair-like projections called cilia, designed to catch and eliminate germs and various foreign particles that could otherwise prove harmful to the body. The more contaminates are present, the more mucus must be produced to sweep them out of harm’s way. Healthy sinuses are self-cleaning and either push mucus toward the back of the throat to be swallowed or down through the nasal passages to be eliminated. There are times when certain airborne pollutants and disease causing pathogens can overwhelm their defenses and create infection. If the sinuses cannot effectively expel these impurities through the digestive or nasal passageways, sinus congestion can occur as a result.
There are several approaches to consider when dealing with “plugged” sinuses. Drinking 6-8 glasses of purified water is essential for proper tissue hydration. Adequate humidification is also important, sometimes requiring the use of a humidifier or vaporizer to improve mucus lubrication in the sinus cavities. An herbal blend of Marshmallow Root and Fenugreek has often been used to soothe inflamed mucus membrane tissue and improve mucus production to move out irritants. Golden Seal Root is historically known for its ability to help address infection in the sinuses and snuffing a combination of equal parts Golden Seal Root and Bayberry Bark powder into the sinuses has often brought quick relief.
Keeping your immune system healthy by avoiding high sugar content foods is critical. It has been said that one teaspoon of sugar can impair the immune system for up to six hours. It is also advantageous to follow “the white rule”, avoiding all white foods (wheat flour, sugar, egg whites, white rice, dairy, etc.) that create an excess mucus burden for the body. Don’t make the body work any harder than it has to when trying to achieve or maintain healthy sinuses and respiratory health. Finally, it would be prudent to utilize an essential oil formula that can help decongest and clear the sinuses. One of the best oil blends we have used includes Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus radiate, Melaleuca alternifolia, Lemon and Ravensara. Follow these recommendations and it is likely you will enjoy one of the best allergy seasons ever.
